The 747 Cockpit Was Put Upstairs Specifically to Allow Nose-Loading Cargo
In the late 1960s, Boeing engineers believed supersonic airliners like the SST and Concorde would quickly make subsonic passenger jets obsolete. To future-proof the 747 investment, chief designer Joe Sutter moved the cockpit to the upper deck hump so the entire front nose could be hinged upward to swallow standard shipping containers as a freighter.
