Concorde Stretched Up to 10 Inches in Flight Due to Friction Heat
Cruising at Mach 2.04 (1,354 mph), aerodynamic friction with atmospheric molecules heated Concorde's aluminium airframe up to 127 C at the nose tip. This thermal load caused the entire fuselage to expand by 20 to 25 cm (8 to 10 inches) during flight, opening a noticeable gap between the flight engineer's console and the bulkhead.
